Flare aids rescue of injured snowboarder

Police in Wisconsin, USA, used a flare to aid the rescue of an injured snowboarder in freezing conditions.

Racine County Communications Center received a phone call from a woman saying her brother had been injured in a snowmobile accident one day in January 2019.

The 23-year-old man had called her to say he had flipped his snowmobile at the intersection of trails in the town of Dover, but she could not find him.

Racine County Sheriff, Christopher Schmaling, says the first deputy on scene questioned the caller and narrowed the search area down.

He then spotted what appeared to be a cell phone being waived in a farmer’s field about 400 feet away.

The deputy located the patient who was unable to walk and was in severe pain. The officer then used a flare to signal his location to other responders and gave first aid to the injured party. The temperature at the time of the call was -3.0' F (almost -20C).

Kansasville Fire and Rescue were called to the scene, to stablise the patient and take him on to hospital for treatment.
